Bella's Birthday Card by Wild Rose Studio

I have several Wild Rose Studio stamps but haven't really made much with them yet. This one is an image of Bella, a sweet little elephant. The company also makes matching papers. I used one of the patterned sheets for this card but they have a couple sheets featuring Bella as well (I can easily see myself hoarding these). I am also trying out my QOR watercolors for the first time (other than just making swatches). The colors are very intense. They tended to stain the paper (Arches Hot Press) so lifting was difficult - not sure if this was due to the watercolor, the paper itself, or the combo. I'll be doing some more testing!

Making the Card

1. Cut pink cardstock to 7 x 10 inches; fold in half to form a 5 x 7 card base.

2. Cut watercolor paper to about 4 1/2 inch square. Stamp Bella's Birthday in the center with VersaFine Onyx Black ink. Let dry completely and/or heat set. Watercolor image. I used QOR watercolors.

3. Die cut watercolored image using largest MFT Inside/Out Stitched Square (or other stitched square die... be sure to measure it for mat). Cut blue cardstock mats: 4 3/4 x 6 1/8 inches and 4 x 4 inches (i.e. 1/8 inch larger than your stitched die). Cut Bella's Birthday patterned paper with dotted circles 4 5/8 x 6 inches. Adhere patterned paper to 4 3/4 x 6 1/8 inch blue cardstock. Adhere watercolored image to other (be sure to use strong tape, especially if the image warped). Hint: if the paper warped a lot, you may lightly mist on the back, place face down on a craft mat, and place weights on the back (I used my acrylic block and a book on top of that). Cover balloon in Glossy Accents. Add Wink of Stella to butterfly wings.

4. Punch butterfly from white cardstock. Watercolor in same colors as butterfly in watercolored image. Use a black marker (e.g. Memento Tuxedo Black) to add details as shown. Be sure to go around the edges from the back side with the brush tip. Color wing areas with Wink of Stella.

5. From pink cardstock, die cut two copies of "happy birthday" using Sizzix Celebration Words: Script dies. You may cut more if you would like a thicker stack. Line up and glue the like words together in a stack. Ink the bottoms using Memento Rose Bud ink and an ink blending tool. Follow up with VersaColor Baby Blue at the bottoms of the letters.  Cover with Wink of Stella. Coat with Glossy Accents.

6. Adhere red satin ribbon around matted patterned paper where shown. Adhere to card base. Adhere matted watercolored image to card base, using dimensional tape, as shown. Glue letters to ribbon as shown. Carefully bend each side butterfly wing slightly up (try to leave the body flat). Glue butterfly where shown.

Doodlebug Design Quick Card - Stuck on You

Here's another fairly quick card using Doodlebug Design papers. So Much Pun is part of their "punny" collection, along with So Punny. They have a page or two in each pack that can be cut apart for easy additions to cards. I made this particular card for my husband. I just love how cute and colorful Doodlebug Design products are!

Making the Card

1. Cut red cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut black cardstock 4 x 5 1/4 inches for mat; set aside. In the So Much Pun 6x6 paper pad, find the page with the smiling bandages.  Cut to 3 7/8 inches tall first, watching orientation of bandages (i.e. cut off top or bottom). Next cut to 5 1/8 wide, keeping the leftover strip of bandages for the inside of the card. Adhere to black mat then adhere to card base.

2. From red cardstock, die cut Linked Hearts. Adhere where shown on card base. You may want to wait until you do step 3 before placing and gluing hearts. Note: the hearts I used have been discontinued but I put an alternative in the Supplies list; you may have to change the orientation of these hearts and the pun in step 3.

3. In the So Much Pun 12x12 Paper Pack, find the sheet of square puns and cut out the "I'm stuck on you" pun. Cut black cardstock slightly larger (I just put the pun in a corner of the cardstock, with the amount of space I wanted on the cut sides, then put pencil marks on the other sides to match, and cut). Use the Crop-A-Dile Corner Chomper Tool to round the corners 1/4 inch on both the pun and the black cardstock; adhere together. Adhere to card base as shown using dimensional tape.

4. Optional, use Wink of Stella on main bandage. Once dry, add Glossy Accents over same bandage.

5. From white glitter cardstock, die cut triple hearts using Coffee Charms die. Adhere where shown.

6. Cut red paper with Envelope Liner die for A2 card (sorry, inside liner is not shown). Set aside small red hearts. Make an A2 envelope from white paper using Envelope Board - leave unassembled (assembly in step 7). Stamp bandage and face on front bottom left corner with Memento Tuxedo Black ink (may want to fold envelope temporarily to note where to stamp but lay it all flat again for stamping). Color image with colored pencils.

7. Adhere liner to inside envelope then assemble envelope. Use a bone folder to help with folds.

8. For the inside of the card (image further below), cut a black mat slightly larger than the saved strip of bandages. Adhere together than to inside of card where shown. In the So Much Pun 6x6 Paper Pack, find the sheet of square puns (matching the 12x12 for the front of the card) and cut out the "I'm stuck on you" pun. Cut black cardstock slightly larger; adhere together then adhere inside of card where shown.

9. To add a little more detail to the small bandages on both the front of the card and on the inside strip, glue small red hearts (saved from step 6) as shown. You may have to look closely to see them. Your pattern may vary somewhat depending on how the pattern was printed and cut on your particular sheet. I recommend placing all hearts first then gluing then down once you like the placement. I put 5 on the front and 3 inside the card.

XOXO Bandages Get Well Card

I stamped the background mainly with one stamp and popped one bandage and the bandage box forward by using color (Copic markers) and Nuvo Crystal Glaze for dimension. I also added Clear Wink of Stella to the colored bandage to make it look a little magical (if you are going to have a boo boo, why not use a sparkly bandage?). Simple matting gives this card a clean look so the focus will be on the colored stamped images.

Making the Card

1. Cut beige cardstock to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut black cardstock 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Cut alcohol marker friendly cardstock 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches (I used X-Press It Blending Card).

2. Using Memento Tuxedo Black ink, stamp bandage box plus bandage (Get Well) above it where shown. These will be the ones you color. Also stamp bandage box in Jet Black StazOn ink on masking paper (I used Tim Holtz/Idea-ology Mask Sheets but I think they have been discontinued). Trim around mask, cutting down middle of black line as best as possible. Apply mask to stamped image (hint: if the mask is too sticky, before applying stick it to your shirt or pants to remove some of the stickiness - I forgot to do this and tore the paper slightly when removing mine).

3. Use Gray Flannel Memento ink to stamp the rest of the bandages as shown. Carefully remove the mask from the bandage box.

4. Color bandage above box with alcohol markers. I used Copic markers in colors E30, E31, E34. Color bandage box: C0, C1, C2, C4, C6.

5. Apply Clear Wink of Stella to bandage. (See photo - it actually shows up better in person.) Apply Nuvo Crystal Glaze over colored bandage and box (note: you could also use Glossy Accents). Set aside to dry.

6. Stamp "Sending Get Well Thoughts..." (Get Well) inside card with Memento Tuxedo Black ink.

7. Once dry, adhere stamped panel to black cardstock; adhere to card base. Hint: I used liquid glue behind the Nuvo Crystal Glaze areas on both layers due to slight warping - you could also use very strong double sided tape.

Frosty in a Frame Christmas Card

This little Frosty stamp is so adorable. I love the sketched look. I wanted my coloring to have a similar look so I used a slightly textured paper with my trusty Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. I matched the colors to the Doodlebug Design background papers. The list of colors is near the end of this post, following the list of supplies. Clear Wink of Stella adds a subtle shimmer to the snowman (unfortunately it doesn't photograph well; see closeup below).

Making the Card

1. Cut white cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 inch x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut blue cardstock 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Adhere to card base. Cut plaid patterned paper (Doodlebug Design Polar Pals) 3 3/4 x 5 inches. Adhere to card base.

2. Cut blue cardstock 2 1/2 x 5 inches. Cut tree patterned paper (Doodlebug Design Polar Pals) 2 1/4 x 5 inches. Adhere to center of blue. Adhere to card base where shown.

3. Use Stamp Platform or stamp positioner to stamp Frosty in Small Frame with Jet Black Archival Ink on Strathmore 500 Bristol Vellum Surface paper. Note: you could use regular cardstock but I like the extra tooth and texture this paper provides; it may need to be stamped a couple times due to the texture. Color with colored pencils. I used Faber-Castell Polychromos; the list of colors that I used is below the list of supplies. Add Clear Wink of Stella to white parts of snowman - it's subtle; you can barely see it in the photo (it looks better in person). Let it dry and add more if desired. Die cut with 4th largest Nested Square Die.

4. Die cut blue cardstock with 3rd largest Nested Square Die. Adhere colored Frosty in Frame using dimensional/mounting tape - leaving room to slide the sentiment banner under.

5. Use Stamp Platform or stamp positioner to stamp Merry Christmas with VersaMark Ink (or other embossing ink) on blue cardstock, leaving enough room to trim and add tail. Emboss with Snowflake Embossing Tinsel. Note: using the Stamp Platform or stamp positioner allows you to stamp again if you don't like the first result. Trim and cut tails. Adhere to card where shown, between the snowman and its mat.

6. Use Aspen Flurry Punch All Over the Page on white cardstock to create snowflakes. I actually used the Punch Around the Page Snow Flurry punch but it is no longer manufactured, although you can still find it on eBay or other places online. Adhere snowflakes to sticky side of Post-it Tape. Apply Star Dust Stickles. Let dry completely. Adhere where shown (I used tweezers to place each snowflake with a dab of glue).

YNS Sweet Birthday Card Featuring Gumdrops (Challenge)

This post is part of the Your Next Stamp (YNS) Gumdrop Challenge. The challenge is to use YNS Gumdrops on a project. I chose to use the Total Sweetness stamp set. I colored it with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils on Neenah Desert Storm cardstock. It didn't have quite enough "pop" to go with the brightly colored Gumdrops so I added extra bling with Stickles and a Wink of Stella glitter pen. It's difficult to see all the glitter and shine in the photos but it looks very pretty in person. The result is delicious!

Making the Card

1. Cut Desert storm cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut another piece about 4 x 4 inches. Note: you may trim to the dimensions in step 2 if you have a stamp positioned - I left extra space in case the stamping was off, plus it is easier to color on a larger piece. Stamp the little girl sitting on the banana split sundae in black ink.

2. Color image with your favorite colored pencils. I used Faber-Castell Polychromos. Hint: use a light touch, color in circles, and layer the color. If you press too hard, you will get shiny spots and the tooth of the paper will be destroyed (i.e. it won't take any more color). Trim to 3 x 3 1/4 inches, centering image.

3. Add Wink of Stella to the ice cream, the girl's shirt, and her shoes. Add Glossy Accents to the cherries. Mix Turquoise and Star Dust Stickles then paint on main part of sundae bowl as shown. Add a dot of Thistle Stickles to the center of the daisy in the girl's hair. Set aside to dry.

4. Stamp sentiment on Desert Storm. Punch with 1 1/4 inch circle. Punch pink cardstock with 1 1/2 inch scalloped circle. Add Thistle Stickles all around the edges, be sure to cover the parts that will show. Set aside to dry.

5. Cut pink cardstock to 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Cut smiling tea cup paper (YNS Hugs and Kisses) to 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches; adhere to pink cardstock. Adhere these to card base.

6. Cut pink cardstock to 3 1/8 x 3 3/8 inches. Adhere image to this piece then adhere to card as shown. Use dimensional tape to adhere sentiment to scalloped circle with Stickles. Add to card with dimensional tape where shown.

7. Add Gumdrops as shown.

Love to Hear From You with Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor and Distress Oxide Ink

When I saw this sweet little girl, I decided I would like to color her in soft colors. I chose a very girly pink. I used the new Distress Oxide inks to color the background, giving it some texture with drops of water. I also used Wink of Stella to give her dress and hairband some sparkle, plus Glossy Accents on the jar to make it look more like glass. The stamp Love To Hear From You is by Dreamerland Crafts.

Making the Card

1. Cut Neenah Desert Storm cardstock to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base.

2. Cut another piece of Desert Storm about the same size as the card front (4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches). Stamp Love To Hear From You (Dreamerland Crafts) in the center using black ink (e.g. Memento Tuxedo Black). Note: if you use a stamp positioner, I recommend leaving the stamp in place - after coloring, many of the lines became dull. I used a black Copic Multiliner to go over all the lines but it would have been much easier to just stamp over it once the coloring was done.

3. Stamp the image on masking paper (I used Post-It Tape). Be sure it is dry before cutting around the image. Hint: cut on the black line so you won't have a ghost line around the image after blending. Place mask over image (ideally you should see some of the black line) and use an ink blending tool to apply Broken China Distress Oxide Ink around the girl, but don't go below the grass line. Be sure to soften edges as you move out. Cut grass off mask and replace mask over girl. Apply Peeled Paint Distress Oxide Ink over grass areas, softening edges. Spray and splatter with water. Let sit for a short time then dab with a clean paper towel to get a blotchy texture in the background.

4. Remove mask. Use a blending stump or small paint brush to apply blue under chair between the legs (you could also have cut this area from the mask with a kraft knife before applying Broken China but I find this easier). Shield image from bottom of chair up and lightly spray the area you just applied, dab. Note: don't worry if things aren't perfect - the pencils will can that.

5. Color image with colored pencils. I used Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, which are oil based pencils. I have the full set but I found that I would have liked more colors, especially flesh colored. It was really difficult shading her skin. The medium and dark flesh colors are really fake looking so I ended up blending a multitude of colors including brown, gray, and light violet, going over each with flesh colors. I'm still not quite satisfied but the paper was becoming saturated (shiny). I used a little Sansodor (mineral spirits) on a stump to remove the shiny spots. You can fill in any blue or green areas that didn't enough ink, such as around the blades of grass. Use a light hand and it should fill in nicely. I colored the grass in various greens to give them more depth and shadow. Use a white gel pen to add highlights as desired.

6. At this point either re-stamp the image using your positioner or go over the lines with a black pen. I used a Copic Multiliner (size .2). Optional: add Wink of Stella to her dress and headband and Glossy Accents to the jar. Once these are dry, use a stitched rectangle die to cut out the image. I used the largest Lawn Fawn Small Stitched Rectangle Stackables die for this.

7. Cut a piece of pink cardstock a little bigger than the rectangle (step 6). Mine measures 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches. Adhere to card base.

8. Stamp "Thinking of You" in embossing ink (or VersaMark) on vellum. Emboss in white (hint: heat up your heat tool before bringing it to the vellum). Cut it as a strip (longer than card front). Wrap around card front as shown and adhere on back of card - leave a little more space on the right side for the bow. Use dimensional tape to adhere to card base.

9. Double up twine or jute if necessary, then tie a bow. Adhere to card where shown.

Hedgehog Love Card

Here's a cute card that is perfect for Valentine's day or to tell someone you love them. It was created with Frantic Stamper dies and colored with Copic markers. The background can be varied in pattern by using different colors if desired.

Making the Card

1. Cut red cardstock 4 1/4 x 11 inches. Fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/5 inch top folding card base.

2. Cut 3 hearts and the word "Lovely" from red cardstock. Trim ends of "Lovely" to just "Love". Optional: coat each with clear Wink of Stella or other clear glitter pen. Add Glossy Accents to all and set aside to dry.

3. Follow these instructions carefully. Cut a piece of clear double sided adhesive just a hair smaller than the size of the die. Die cut pink cardstock but leave the pieces in the die. You may need to use a metal cutting plate due to the detail. Remove one backing sheet on adhesive. Carefully line up and stick to die cut pieces. Be sure to rub all over, especially on the small triangles at the edges. You may even want to use your die pick to gently push the smaller pieces into the adhesive. Now remove the die cuts as one piece. You may have to replace a few stubborn pieces by hand. Stick to center of card front. Note: you could cut the clear double sided adhesive larger, then trim down after the pieces are in place.

4. Add double sided adhesive to a piece of white cardstock just larger than the die. Die cut from cardstock side (so adhesive will be on the back). Remove white frame from die and carefully adhere over pink frame on card. Hint: I exposed the top part of the adhesive, cutting off the backing sheet just at the top, lined up the bottom and stuck the top down; then I removed the rest of the backing. This made it easier for me to line it all up.

5. Die cut two copies of baby hedgehogs from alcohol marker friendly cardstock. On one copy of each, cut off the hair and discard the rest. These will be layered on top; color these with hair colors. On the full copies, color the hair parts in a mid or dark matching hair color so they won't be so noticeable under the top layer. Note: the list of Copic colors I used is below the supplies. Color the bodies. I used darker colors to fill in eyes and nose on each (lighter on the girl). To give them some dimension and shine, I used Tuxedo Black Pico Embellisher on the boy's eyes and nose and Desert Sand on the girl's (it is rather transparent so be sure to color with brown first).

6. Adhere hair to each hedgehog using dimensional tape. Adhere hedgehogs to card front as shown using dimensional tape. Adhere hearts and "Love" where shown.

Embossing and Coloring Sheet Metal with StazOn

Making the Charm

1. Cut dark blue cardstock to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half for a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base.

2. Cut alcohol marker friendly cardstock 3 3/4 x 5 inches.

3. Follow the instructions for your die cutting machine to make the proper sandwich for Sizzlit sized dies. Emboss the 1 inch SHEET Metal. The good side will face up (not toward the die) since you want to color the raised side.

5. Adhere panel to card base. Tie ribbon in bow. Open small jump ring, put charm on it then close it. Open medium jump ring and add half the beads, the charm jump ring, then the other half of the beads. Thread through bow center; close jump ring.

Moody Ballerina Dancing Step-Ups Card

Here's another card using the adorable Moody Ballerina stamp set by Oak Tree Stamps. This adorable image was watercolored in pink then given an added shimmer to her tutu thanks to a clear Wink of Stella brush pen. Making the Card

1. Using the main Sizzix Step-Ups card die, cut the card base from pink cardstock and fold as instructed. Cut striped patterned paper using the large decorator die for the center of the card. Cut the purple patterned paper with the side (starred) decorator pieces. Adhere decorator pieces where shown.

2. Stamp "Dance" and "Like no One's Watching" from Oak Tree Stamps: Moody Ballerina set on polkadot patterned paper as shown. Cut out. Measure and cut a strip of pink paper 1/8 inch larger in each dimension to frame the sentiment. Adhere together as shown.

3. Stamp three dancing ballerinas from Oak Tree Stamps: Moody Ballerina in waterproof black ink on watercolor paper. Watercolor images. Add clear Wink of Stella to each tutu. Carefully cut around each with detail scissors. I used a craft knife to cut out the smallest areas. From the back side, go around edges with a black marker (I used a black Copic Multiliner with brush nib tip). This hide the white edges and gives them a finished look.

4. Cut pink cardstock using Spellbinders Lacy Ovals (check size against ballerina). Cut oval from polkadot patterned paper; adhere to lacy oval. Adhere this to main card as shown. Adhere sentiment where shown using dimensional tape. Adhere ballerinas where shown using dimensional tape.

5. Die cut one frame edge from purple cardstock; add clear Wink of Stella. Adhere to bottom of card where shown. Cut two lengths of pink/white twine. Tie in a single bow. Adhere button and twine as shown.
