No Line Coloring with Watercolor/Gouache Greeting Card


Recently I posted a no line coloring card using only colored pencils (here's another example as well). This time I used gouache to block in the colors and then went over the image with Polychromos colored pencils to add gradients and details. Gouache reactivates when painted over so it's difficult to achieve smooth gradients, especially if the gouache is student grade. I first tried Arteza Gouache, before I planned to use colored pencils, but it was really not working for me so I switched to Holbein Gouache.* It was a little better but still moved the paint too much. If you are going to use colored pencils in the end as recommended, either gouache should work.

*A note about gouache: there are two types of gouache, one that reactivates with water and one that does not. The latter is called Acryl or Acryla gouache (depending on brand); these are more like acrylic paint. They are permanent once dry, thus you may layer these without affecting the previous (dried) layers.

Making the Card

1. Cut watercolor paper to about 4x6 inches or so. I used 5x7 precut sheets. Use Stamp Platform and Antique Linen Distress Ink to stamp Just Dance with Me (Dreamerland Crafts). The Distress Ink will react with water and should just about disappear while painting.

2. Use a Copic Multiliner SP Black .3 pen to trace the eyes, eye brows, and mouths - be sure to do this before coloring or you might not be able to see where to put them. Use gouache to block in colors of the image (I used Holbein and some Arteza - see introduction for more information). You can mix darker and lighter colors trying to blend as you go but you may not get a great gradient. Also, details will be easier to add with color pencil (next step).


3. Once the image has dried, use Polychromos colored pencils to add shading, gradients, and details. I found this especially useful for the hair and cheeks. Keep the pencils out for the next step.

4. Use a pair of detail scissors and a craft knife (on a self-healing mat) to cut around image. Use colored pencils to gently go around outside of image in matching colors to hide white edges.

5. Cut white Soft-Finish Cardstock to 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base. I like the soft texture on the front of this cardstock and, since the reverse side is smooth, it is easy to write inside the card. Cut purple plaid paper (Perfectly Plaid Rainbow, Lawn Fawn) to 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Adhere to card base.

6. Die cut white Soft-Finish Cardstock using die from Double-Stitched Circle Set (or other stitched circle set) - see the image below for size. Use the next size up to die cut blue cardstock. Adhere white circle to blue. Adhere to card where shown (if you want to check placement, just hold off gluing until later). Use dimensional/mounting tape to adhere colored image to white circle.

7. Prep a the back of a piece of white Soft Finish Cardstock with powder tool; stamp "Just dance with me" using Purple Hydrangea VersaMagic ink (I recommend using Stamp Platform, especially if you want to stamp on the front of the cardstock where there is texture). Heat emboss using Silver Pearl Ranger Embossing Powder (you may also use clear but the pearl gives it a beautiful subtle shimmer). Die cut with stitched circle. Adhere to card where shown using dimensional/mounting tape.

8. Adhere purple sequins where shown; I recommend using a Crystal Ninja Tanto pick up tool for placement.

Sweet Puppy Pop-up Birthday Card


I used this sweet Dreamerland Crafts stamp "Love My Puppy" as the foundation for my Spinner Square Pop-up birthday card. I wanted to have the image peeking through a front window in the card, then when opened, have the sentiment move down as the image pops up. The fun Doodlebug Design papers I used - Sugar Shoppe - are older (from 2014) although you can still find some around. Of course you can substitute some of the newer Doodlebug Design papers, just adjust the colors to match.

Once again I'm testing Lavender Spike Oil as my blending solvent. It has a very strong smell of lavender so if you don't like lavender, I don't recommend it. The fumes are not toxic (unlike other popular solvents). This time I'm using it with oil based pencils - Faber-Castell Polychromos. I must say, they blended beautifully.

Making the Card

1. Use Stamp Platform to stamp Love My Puppy (Dreamerland Crafts) on Strathmore 500 Bristol Plate in Memento Tuxedo Black ink. Use Black Copic Multiliner SP .3 to draw a ground line across image background.


2. Color image using Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils, blending with Lavender Spike Oil and blending stumps. Note: I use a Kum Long Point Sharpener to sharpen my pencils - it gives you a very fine point in two steps. Once the image has been colored, use the largest square from Spinner Square Pop-up to die cut image. This will be your pop-up platform (step 3).

3. Before assembling the card, watch the video below - specific notes follow. I recommend watching the video then looking at the notes, and finally assembling the card while watching the video a second time.


Cut teal cardstock for the base card as shown in the video, 4 1/4 x 11 inches. Die cut teal for the arm - mark with Xs where shown. Cut the inside papers - see photos for the patterns I used; note: I used 4 x 5 5/16 inches instead of 4 x 5 1/4 inches to put the inside edges a little closer to the fold. Remember to only tack down the left side of the window sheet (inside left) as shown in the video. I used recycled plastic packaging for the window. For the front of the card, I cut the paper to 4 x 5 1/4 inches. You could adhere it to the front temporarily and try to cut through 3 layers but it probably won't cut all the way through. I recommend cutting two layers as in the video, removing the resulting cut squares (keep them), adhering the front patterned paper, then fitting the die into the hole to cut the front.

Cut frame, from diagonal teal striped side of paper, as shown in video. Keep squares that fall out of windows. I used the teal one for the rectangle that moves inside. For adhesive, Lineco in a fine tip bottle (shown in video) works very well; it creates a strong bond, and dries quickly.


4. For the sentiment, use the leftover inside square from the front of the card - the backside has light teal stripes. Use Stamp Platform to stamp "Happy Birthday" (Birthday 11) in VersaMark ink. Heat emboss with Gun Metal (note: I cut my stamp words apart; if you do not want to cut them, then you will have to mask them). Trim to fit on movable arm and adhere (I used removable tape to test before gluing down to make sure it wouldn't stick out of card when closed).

5. Using balloon from Birthday Charms, cut three from teal cardstock, one from yellow cardstock, and one from dark pink cardstock. Be sure to keep all holes! You will glue them back in and flatten with a Teflon bone folder (which flattens but won't make the paper shiny). Use white Gelly Roll to draw shine on balloon (you may use the stencil provided with the die). Note where each balloon goes on the card (the teal ones should all line up), cut twine for strings, adhere top of twine where it will be behind each balloon (if it helps mark with pencil first). Adhere balloons where shown, using dimensional tape to pop up dark pink balloon on front of card. Die cut small heart (Birthday Charms) from dark pink cardstock; adhere where shown, gluing front balloon strings together. Adhere sequins where shown (note: be sure sequins do not interfere with arm movement).

Frosty in a Frame Christmas Card

This little Frosty stamp is so adorable. I love the sketched look. I wanted my coloring to have a similar look so I used a slightly textured paper with my trusty Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils. I matched the colors to the Doodlebug Design background papers. The list of colors is near the end of this post, following the list of supplies. Clear Wink of Stella adds a subtle shimmer to the snowman (unfortunately it doesn't photograph well; see closeup below).

Making the Card

1. Cut white cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 inch x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut blue cardstock 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Adhere to card base. Cut plaid patterned paper (Doodlebug Design Polar Pals) 3 3/4 x 5 inches. Adhere to card base.

2. Cut blue cardstock 2 1/2 x 5 inches. Cut tree patterned paper (Doodlebug Design Polar Pals) 2 1/4 x 5 inches. Adhere to center of blue. Adhere to card base where shown.

3. Use Stamp Platform or stamp positioner to stamp Frosty in Small Frame with Jet Black Archival Ink on Strathmore 500 Bristol Vellum Surface paper. Note: you could use regular cardstock but I like the extra tooth and texture this paper provides; it may need to be stamped a couple times due to the texture. Color with colored pencils. I used Faber-Castell Polychromos; the list of colors that I used is below the list of supplies. Add Clear Wink of Stella to white parts of snowman - it's subtle; you can barely see it in the photo (it looks better in person). Let it dry and add more if desired. Die cut with 4th largest Nested Square Die.


4. Die cut blue cardstock with 3rd largest Nested Square Die. Adhere colored Frosty in Frame using dimensional/mounting tape - leaving room to slide the sentiment banner under.

5. Use Stamp Platform or stamp positioner to stamp Merry Christmas with VersaMark Ink (or other embossing ink) on blue cardstock, leaving enough room to trim and add tail. Emboss with Snowflake Embossing Tinsel. Note: using the Stamp Platform or stamp positioner allows you to stamp again if you don't like the first result. Trim and cut tails. Adhere to card where shown, between the snowman and its mat.

6. Use Aspen Flurry Punch All Over the Page on white cardstock to create snowflakes. I actually used the Punch Around the Page Snow Flurry punch but it is no longer manufactured, although you can still find it on eBay or other places online. Adhere snowflakes to sticky side of Post-it Tape. Apply Star Dust Stickles. Let dry completely. Adhere where shown (I used tweezers to place each snowflake with a dab of glue).

Fall Branch Greeting Card

Rubbernecker Stamps Branch Blossoms with Faber-Castell Polychromos

Although the main Rubbernecker Stamp's image is part of their watercolor stamp collection, I decided to stamp it in dye ink (Memento) and enhance it with colored pencils (Faber-Castell Polychromos). I colored the flowers in Autumn colors for a Fall greeting card. The Fireworks! spray custom colored bow matches perfectly, as does the Lawn Fawn Perfectly Plaid Fall background paper.

Making the Card

1. Cut brown cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut orange cardstock 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Adhere to card base. Cut orange/yellow plaid (Lawn Fawn Perfectly Plaid Fall 6x6 Pad) 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches. Adhere to card base.

2. Cut a piece of Strathmore 500 Bristol Vellum to about 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches (a bit bigger than necessary for some wiggle room). You could probably use white cardstock but since I'm layering a lot of colors, I decided to use a really good paper for it.

3. Use a Stamp Platform or a stamp positioner to stamp the thick branch layer in Toffee Crunch Memento Ink near the center of the Bristol paper. Position the small branch layer and stamp with Rich Cocoa Memento Ink. Position the flower layer and stamp with Cantaloup Memento Ink.

4. Use colored pencils (Faber-Castell Polychromos) to color the image, layer yellow-oranges to orange-reds on flowers with the darkest at the centers. Add some browns to the branches. You may also add extra flowers or branches, even extend the existing branches if you like.

5. Cut a length of seam binding. Tie a small bow. Spray center with Dandelion Fireworks! Next spray with Cantaloup, overlapping the Dandelion. Finally spray the ends of the bow loops and tails with Tangelo. Set aside to dry.

6. Die cut image using third largest stitched rectangle die, centering the branch but leaving room for the sentiment in the top left corner. Use the Stamp Platform or a stamp positioner to stamp the sentiment in Rich Cocoa Memento Ink where shown. Adhere to card. Adhere bow where shown.

Colorful Bird Shaker Card

Shaker Card With Doodlebug Designs Paper and Sequins

Here is a super colorful card with a shaker element. I used Doodlebug Design paper and sequins - they make the brightest colored stuff! And I absolutely love their patterned papers. The bird and greeting stamps are by Rubbernecker Stamps. I wanted the upside down bird to be extra colorful so it is the only bird that I did not add black to. Unfortunately it didn't stand out as much as I would have liked, but the bird's zany upside down antics still make the sentiment relevant. If I had to color this again, I would probably make the other birds look more like crows and robins.

Making the Card

1. Cut white cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut purple cardstock 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Adhere to card base. Cut rainbow heart paper (Fairy Tales, Doodlebug Design 6x6 Pad) to 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches. Adhere to card base.

2. Stamp Be Yourself birds in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink on white cardstock. Color with colored pencils (I used Faber-Castell Polychromos). Die cut using Nested Rectangle Small Stitch Die Cut Set (6th die in from outside). Adhere to center of card.

3. Using the same die from step 2 and the die two sizes bigger (4th die in) - line them up as a frame with cutting side down; use masking tape or other removable tape on them to keep them in position for cutting. Cut about 5 or 6 frames of white cardstock and one frame of purple cardstock.

4. Line up and glue all white cardstock frames together to form a thick stack. Adhere to card, lining up around image. Cut plastic packaging with larger die (4th die in) - trim off stitching (it doesn't have to be exact - you just want it to be a little smaller than the outside frame).

5. Add various colors of sequins (Doodlebug Design Sequins) over bird image inside stack of frames. Optional: glue a few in place. Adhere plastic packaging. I use Gem-Tac - it works really well on slick surfaces.

6. To add the sentiment (Create a Garden 2) to the purple frame, either cut apart the phrases or mask them one at a time for stamping. I find that VersaMark works best for detailed embossing. Stamp sentiment as shown; emboss in white. Adhere frame to top of stack using Gem-Tac.

YNS Sweet Birthday Card Featuring Gumdrops (Challenge)


This post is part of the Your Next Stamp (YNS) Gumdrop Challenge. The challenge is to use YNS Gumdrops on a project. I chose to use the Total Sweetness stamp set. I colored it with Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils on Neenah Desert Storm cardstock. It didn't have quite enough "pop" to go with the brightly colored Gumdrops so I added extra bling with Stickles and a Wink of Stella glitter pen. It's difficult to see all the glitter and shine in the photos but it looks very pretty in person. The result is delicious!

Making the Card

1. Cut Desert storm cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut another piece about 4 x 4 inches. Note: you may trim to the dimensions in step 2 if you have a stamp positioned - I left extra space in case the stamping was off, plus it is easier to color on a larger piece. Stamp the little girl sitting on the banana split sundae in black ink.

2. Color image with your favorite colored pencils. I used Faber-Castell Polychromos. Hint: use a light touch, color in circles, and layer the color. If you press too hard, you will get shiny spots and the tooth of the paper will be destroyed (i.e. it won't take any more color). Trim to 3 x 3 1/4 inches, centering image.

3. Add Wink of Stella to the ice cream, the girl's shirt, and her shoes. Add Glossy Accents to the cherries. Mix Turquoise and Star Dust Stickles then paint on main part of sundae bowl as shown. Add a dot of Thistle Stickles to the center of the daisy in the girl's hair. Set aside to dry.


4. Stamp sentiment on Desert Storm. Punch with 1 1/4 inch circle. Punch pink cardstock with 1 1/2 inch scalloped circle. Add Thistle Stickles all around the edges, be sure to cover the parts that will show. Set aside to dry.

5. Cut pink cardstock to 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Cut smiling tea cup paper (YNS Hugs and Kisses) to 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches; adhere to pink cardstock. Adhere these to card base.

6. Cut pink cardstock to 3 1/8 x 3 3/8 inches. Adhere image to this piece then adhere to card as shown. Use dimensional tape to adhere sentiment to scalloped circle with Stickles. Add to card with dimensional tape where shown.

7. Add Gumdrops as shown.

My Dear Puppy Stamp Using Mermaid Markers by Jane Davenport


This is such a sweet image of a boy and his puppy. Puppy hugs are the best! It makes me miss having our own pups. I colored the image with Mermaid Markers by Jane Davenport and American Crafts. There's a mini-review in the video and some final thoughts below the step-by-step.

I dug out my Doodlebug Design paper pad "Puppy Love" to use but I had already colored the image, so many of the colors didn't really match (I need to keep reminding myself - pick paper first, then color!). I did however find the perfect piece to make an embellishment; it came on a page of labels within the pad. I also used a couple sheets from their "Gingham-Linen Rainbow Petite Prints." I think I need to order more of this pad. The colors are fantastic!

Making the Card

1. Cut red cardstock 7 x 10 inches; fold in half to form a 5 x 7 inch card base. Cut Desert Storm cardstock to 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches. Cut kraft cardstock to 4 1/2 x 6 1/8. Adhere kraft to Desert Storm, centering at bottom, leaving 1/8 inch space. Adhere turquoise ribbon by wrapping around top of panel, centering in gap, folding ribbon around the sides. I used tape runner along the back of the ribbon. Adhere panel to card base.

2. Cut Doodlebug Designs Gingham-Linen Petite Prints blue/green gingham paper to 4 3/8 x 6 inches. Adhere to center of kraft.

3. Cut watercolor paper to about 4 x 4 inches. Stamp My Dear Puppy image with waterproof ink (e.g. VersaFine Onyx Black). Watercolor the image using Mermaid Markers by Jane Davenport as shown in video below.


4. Die cut image using 2nd largest square (Spellbinders, Classic Squares Large). Die cut red linen sheet from Doodlebug Designs Gingham-Linen Petite Prints using largest Fleur de Lis Squares (Spellbinders). Adhere to card base as shown. I used On Point Glue by Imagine Crafts to get into the detail areas. Use dimensional tape to adhere image to center of Fleur de Lis frame.


5. To create the embellishment, I used the Making Memories Tag Maker along with the Large Circle Rims. The one I used is about 2 inches in diameter. I didn't realize that they are no longer being made until I started writing this post. Tim Holtz and Idea-ology are coming out with a Tag Press tool that's similar but I only saw the circle rims go up to 1 1/4 inches. You can, however, still get the Making Memories tool and a variety of tag rims at a reasonable price on eBay and Esty. I just traced around the rim on the image (from Doodlebug Designs Puppy Love, label page), cut inside the traced circle so it would fit inside the rim, then used the tool to flatten it. Adhere to card where shown using dimensional tape.

6. Tie a bow using the turquoise ribbon. Adhere where shown (I used Glue Dots).


Mermaid Markers Summed Up

These markers are bright and highly pigmented! Note that the dye based inks are not lightfast, meaning you should not expose them to direct light for very long or the colors may shift and fade. If you would like to preserve your art, you could coat it with a UV filtering finish, or just scan it and print it. The water brushes perform like most other decent water brushes - they sometimes distribute too much pigment but at other times not quite enough. Experience will help in knowing when to squeeze the base for more color as well as how hard to squeeze. Once empty, the brushes my be filled with water to use as a regular water brush or they may be filled with pigmented water or other dye ink. Some examples include a few drops of a Distress Ink reinker and water, Fireworks spray, or Distress Stain (add water as desired).

I did have a slight issue with markers having a few bristles on the brush bent down. I cut them off since there were not many. The instructions mention using warm water to reshape but since they were new, I didn't want to chance ruining the tips. In the future I may try this if any need reshaping.

The colors blend and mix well. I was able to make a variety of shades with these pigments, just like watercolor. They are transparent and may be layered like watercolor as well. Don't paint next to wet colors or the colors may bleed together; instead work on one area then move to another non-adjacent area until the first has dried. Once dry, you may add layers (glazing) to darken or change the color, just don't scrub too hard or it will reactivate the layer below. The paint may be lifted (lightened) somewhat by adding water, letting it sit for a second, then applying a paper towel. The paper will likely be stained though. You will get better results on paper with sizing, such as good quality watercolor paper. The colors don't seem to granulate, probably because they are dye based.

Using the markers tip to tip can create a beautiful, smooth gradient blend. Use colors that are not too close for best results (see video). Be sure to scribble off any excess of the other color before storing. The tip may have some staining but it will perform properly (this is also typical of other water brush markers).

This markers are fairly portable and since you may mix them, you can create virtually any color not in the set. For example, they would be good to take to a crop. I wouldn't recommend them for travel by plane unless in checked baggage; you might have to throw them out at security. Even in checked baggage, they may leak due to the pressure.

Overall, I think I will enjoy using these markers most for making background papers and in places where bright colors are suited.

Dreamerland Crafts Embrace Your Dream Adventure Awaits Card


This is my first post for the Dreamerland Crafts design team! I absolutely love their adorable stamps! This image of a sweet little boy playing with his toy plane and dreaming of adventures is so precious. I wanted it to have a soft look to it so I decided to color the image with colored pencils (Faber-Castell Polychromos) and blend the pencil using stumps and Sansodor (odorless mineral spirits). Just be sure to use this in a well ventilated room (see package warnings). Even though the Sansodor is fairly odorless, it still produces toxic fumes. I keep mine in a small glass jar with a screw lid; I just open it to dip the stump in when I need it then I immediately replace the lid (sometimes I leave it loose if I'm using it a lot).

Making the Card

1. Cut sky blue cardstock to 7 x 10 inches. Fold in half to create a 5 x 7 inch card base.

2. Stamp Embrace Your Dreams using Memento Desert Sand (or other light colored ink). Use the packaging as a guideline. Trace over the eyes, nose, mouth, and part of the patch (looking back, I think I would have preferred to trace the patch in dark brown). Color image with colored pencils, going from light to dark. Use stumps and mineral spirits (in a well ventilated area) to blend areas as you go. Layer colors by staring with a light touch, blend, then layer more in darker areas for shading.


3. Die cut image using 2nd largest stitched circle die (or whatever stitched circle die fits best).

4. Find the following papers in the listed 6x6 pads:

My Mind's Eye Come Away With Me (#6x6203) - Tickets and Adventure Awaits Banner
Teresa Collins Far and Away (FA1010) - Map of North America
Authentique Durrable (#DUR020) - Fuel Gage


5. Cut map paper to 4 3/4 x 6 inches (long side going horizontally, see photo). Adhere map paper to card base where shown. Cut tickets as shown and glue to card base. From the fuel gage paper, die cut using largest stitched circle die (one size larger than the one you used for the image). Adhere where shown. Adhere image in center using dimensional tape. Cut around Adventure Awaits banner; adhere where shown using dimensional tape.

6. Cut three different washi tapes to fit approximately in the bottom left area. Cut tails into each; adhere where shown. Double up a length of twine, thread charm and tie bow. Adhere using strong adhesive (e.g. Glue Dots).
