Let's Hang Out Card

Made for the Susan Tierney-Cockburn Design Team

When I first saw these dies, I really liked them but I couldn't think of how I would use them... finally I came up with a fun sentiment that would work perfectly. Since I don't have a stamp with the sentiment I wanted to use, I just printed it out on my printer.

Making the Card

1. Cut Dove Gray Soft Finish Cardstock to 7 x 10 inches; fold in half to form a card base. Cut red cardstock to 4 5/8 x 6 5/8 inches. Adhere to card base.

2. Die cut scrap of cardstock (any color) with cloud die to create cloud stencil. Die cut another scrap (white cardstock) with grass die to create grass stencil - the top will be the stencil but the bottom will be colored for grass. Cut white cardstock to 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches; use landscape (horizontal) as the base for coloring your scene. To color sky, use the bottom piece of cloud die cut with PanPastel Phtalo Blue Tint (Color No. 560.8, light blue) - use circular motion when coloring. Slightly blur lines and add color as shown to create fluffy clouds. To color grass, use top piece of grass die cut with PanPastel Bright Yellow Green Shade (Color No. 680.30). Hint: I only colored in tips then offset to color more, making thicker grass. I also used the applicator to blend color down then added more stenciled grass. Color the white die cut grass with same yellow green. Cut a couple small pieces of grass to go over bottom of each pole - they will overlap, offset from each other.

3. Die cut Wash Day and Fox (Critters 2) pieces from alcohol marker friendly cardstock (e.g. X-Press It blending card). Color with alcohol markers (list of Copic colors used is at bottom of post). When coloring the quilt, first draw lines with an alcohol marker friendly pen, such as the Copic Multiliner. Shape each piece by rubbing on backs with ball stylus. Optional: use a pointed tool to go over lines on quilt. I penciled in the fox's face then used a small Multiliner (.05) to draw in features. Adhere poles first using thick glue, e.g. Kids Choice Glue (I used a toothpick to apply) - do not add glue to the clotheslines themselves. Adhere clothes as shown. Adhere grass over bottoms of poles (two pieces each, offset). Trim grass if necessary. Adhere fox as shown using dimensional tape.

4. On white cardstock, print sentiment on printer using desired font (hint: print several sizes, and different fonts, leaving plenty of space between each, so you may choose the one you like best). Die cut using medium label die from Lucy Label Pop Up. Add PanPastel Phtalo Blue Tint (Color No. 560.8, light blue) to edges. Adhere to card using dimensional tape where shown.

5. Adhere enamel dots as shown.

Hydrangea Card with Embossed BoBunny Paper

This card has a lot of dimension. The hydrangea are on dome shaped platforms to pop them up; the shaped petals make them look more ealistic. I coated the sentiment with White Radiant Neon Amplify, which puffs up when heated, then mounted it on a popped up label. I added texture to the paper using clear embossing powder and a VersaMarker. I also added subtle designs to the label, also using the VersaMarker but with Sparkle embossing powder through a Stage It Stencil.

Making the Card

1. Cut Whisper Blue Soft Finish Cardstock to 7 x 10 inches; fold in half to form a 5x7 card base. Cut True Blue Soft Finish Cardstock to 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. Optional: go around outside edges with Copic B66 or similar marker - this hides the white core. Adhere to front of card.

2. Cut BoBunny Secret Garden Arbor cardstock to 4 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches. Using largest label die from Lorna Label PopUp, die cut True Blue Soft Finish Cardstock. Optional: go around outside edges with Copic B66. From heavy weight white cardstock, die cut Happy Birthday. (Note: if you do not have heavy weight white cardstock, just die cut a couple copies and glue them in a stack to make them thicker.)

3. As shown in the video below, use Clear embossing powder and VersaMarker to add some shine and slight texture to the paper. You will also decorate the label, using Coffee stencil and Sparkle embossing powder, plus add dimension to the sentiment with White Radiant Neon Amplify.

4. Adhere BoBunny paper to front of card as shown. Create Hydrangea following instructions in video below. I used purple and purple/blue cardstock for the petals - colored them randomly with Elderberry and Paris Dark Memento Inks using a cotton swab to apply the color. I added Narcissus VersaColor ink to the centers. Optional: use clear dimensional silicone under flower domes to help keep their shape. After shaping petals and gluing them on the domes I added small Prills to the centers of each. Use green cardstock for the leaves - highlight with Narcissus VersaColor.

5. Adhere sentiment to label as shown. Using dimensional tape, add label to card where shown. Optional: add sequins as shown.

Rose Wedding Tag

Create a beautiful tag that's perfect for weddings and anniversaries by adding shimmery Delicata Inks to Susan Tierney-Cockburn's Garden Notes - Rose 2 and stenciling on a tag base. Shown on optional Card Stand/Easel by ECD.

Making the Card

1. Cut a piece of White Soft Finish Cardstock to 3 1/2 x 7 inches. Use the main tag die from Tags & More 1 - Lace to die cut top of tag. Trim sides flush with die cut; trim tag to 6 inches in length. Die cut lacy top - be sure to keep the inside pieces to use on the bottom of the tag (see photo). Die cut shown reenforcement piece (for over tag hole). Die cut Love.

2. Die cut Garden Notes - Rose 2 pieces from white cardstock (light weight). Cut extra petals for the large rose (I cut 6 extra).

3. Decorate tag and color die cuts as shown in the video below.

4. Assemble rose as shown in the video below, centering it in the middle of the top stenciled decoration.

6. Adhere Love sentiment and decorative pieces as shown.

Options: if you would like a more subtle background, you could do a tone on tone by using White Shimmer Delicata instead of Silvery Shimmer. For more contrast for the sentiment and decorative pieces, just use Silvery Shimmer and Black Shimmer (i.e. skip the White Shimmer).

Pink Dogwood Shaker Cards

Made for the ECD Susan Tierney-Cockburn Design Team

Dogwoods are one of my favorite trees. Every Spring I look forward to them blooming in my yard. The flowers are so beautiful! In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make two shaker cards at the same time. I used ECD's Soft Finish Cardstock for all but the stand - it has a wonderful texture and the colors are really pigmented. So lovely! The stand was made from plain watercolor paper - I just wanted a simple holder so as not to take away from the cards.

Making the Cards

1. Cut two pieces of plastic packaging just under of 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches (maybe 1/16 smaller).

2. Using Curvy Squares, die cut Rosebud and Perfect Pink Soft Finish Cardstock. Be sure to keep all pieces. Adhere the two largest squares to front of plastic packaging such that one has Rosebud as the outside square with Perfect Pink inside and the opposite on the other. Glue all opposite color dots into the outside frames. See photo as a reference.

3. Using the Dogwood dies, cut the following from each cardstock as listed:
  • White - 18 sets of petals (with 4 in each set): 10 for flowers, the rest for shakers (I kept them sorted by kind)
  • Olive Twist - 10 sets of leaves/calyx and stamen, plus 10 extra small leaves (5 each) for shakers
  • Dark Chocolate - 2 branches
Be sure to keep the shaker pieces separate.

4. I recommend doing a quick Google search for pink dogwood blossoms (select the images tab).  Note the variations in the amount of pink in the blossoms - decide on how much color you would like and color accordingly. Color petals using Fuchsia watercolor pencil by drawing lines down each. Keep a white U around the middle of each tip. See photo. Add water with a small paint brush to activate the watercolor, again keeping the top middle part white. Lines should be somewhat visible. Do both sides. Tap Forest Moss Distress Ink onto craft mat or palette; add water with a small brush and paint a dab in the middle tip of each petal. Do both sides.

5. For the leaves, first apply Forest Moss Distress Ink with a foam blending tool along edges of each leaf then completely cover the backs (especially on the ones which will go in the shaker), cover all white areas of each stamen, plus the edges of each calix (the insides won't show). Use Light Olive watercolor pencil to draw vein lines.

6. Color branches with Oak watercolor pencil - I just traced the embossed lines and used a little water with a brush to go over them. Ink edges with Ground Espresso Distress Ink (hint: to apply hard-to-reach places, dab some on a craft mat and use a brush with water).

7. Shape everything as shown in the video below. Don't assemble just yet; wait until the shaker has been put together.

8. On the back of the card fronts, adhere dimensional tape around edges (backsides of frames) - leave backing on other side of tape for now. It should form a closed box in back so none of the shaker bits will fall out. Go around edges with powder to remove any stickiness. Fill each with petals, leaves, beads, sequins, etc. (be sure to set aside leaves/petals for 10 flowers first!). Cut Café au Lait cardstock to 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches. Peel off backing on dimensional tape and stick down such that color will show in front of card (the back will be white - this is where your message may go).

9. Adhere branches, one on each card, keeping in mind where you would like sentiment. Adhere flowers and leaves as shown in video. Note: I used White Opal Liquid Pearls on the stamen directly instead of using a Pearl Pen to make dots.

10. Die cut sentiments from White, Rosebud, and Perfect Pink cardstocks. Adhere offset with darkest on bottom as shown. Adhere to cards.

You may want to mail a stand along with the card. Check out the Card Stand/Easel by ECD - it's perfect for cards. You may optionally add this to a card base that opens in a more traditional manner by making the Café au Lait cardstock double the size in one dimension (fold in half so color is on outside).

Lily Accordion Oval Card

Made for the ECD Susan Tierney-Cockburn Design Team

The Garden Notes - Lily is probably my favorite flower to make - it's easy to do and it comes out so beautiful! When I saw the Gilded Lily Collection from Graphic 45, I thought it would make the perfect base for a lily card. I love the soft colors, and even though lilies aren't quite this color in nature, I think they turned out pretty well.

Making the Card

1.  Using Accordion Oval Card main die, follow directions on the back of the package: cut two base frames, one from Gilded Lily 8x8 (sheet with lilies all over the front), one from 6x6 (sheet with one side pink with pink writing, the other side pink with flowers). Cut off tabs, etc. as directed.

2. Die cut largest oval (Accordion Oval Card) from same 8x8 lilies sheet as above and another from 6x6 sheet with one side blue with blue writing, the other side blue with cream colored text. Adhere these as shown.

3. Using Oval Flourish Frame Edges, die cut one set from 6x6 blue (step 2), one set from 6x6 pink (step 1), and one set from Olive Twist Soft Finish Cardstock. Adhere to card panels as shown.

4. From Olive Twist Soft Finish Cardstock, die cut vines from Mini Botanicals - Clematis, Ivy. Ink with Forest Moss in a few places. Using the pointed tool, draw a line down the middle of each of the leaves to give them dimension. Cut apart and arrange, then glue around front of card.

5. Using Garden Notes - Lily, die cut 2 sets of petals and stamen from white cardstock and 2 sets of stems/leaves from green cardstock (not the Olive Twist - use a lighter green). Use a foam applicator to add some Antique Linen Distress Ink to all white pieces, both sides. Apply Tattered Rose Distress Ink to a craft mat or palette; use a small paintbrush and water to paint stripes down each petal (do both sides of the loose petals - the back side of the connected petals won't show).  Do the same with Walnut Stain Distress Ink but only apply color to what will be the bottom insides of the petals; also add dots (see images). Use a foam blending tool to apply Forest Moss Distress Ink to edges of leaves and stems. Add a very small amount to bottom half of each stamen (both sides).

6. Watch video for shaping and assembly. Note: I cut the leaf off one of the flowers then added it back elsewhere. Use Antique Linen Distress Embossing Powder for pollen.

Grunge Look Coneflowers Card

This card uses some of the Through the Lens cardstock, as a base for the flowers as well as the card background. I love working with this cardstock! It gives a unique look to everything. I used Distress Inks to add a bit more color then grunged them all  up with white acrylic paint.

Making the Card

1. Cut teal cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base. Cut charcoal cardstock to 4 x 5 1/4 inches. Sand Edges randomly and rough them up to give them a worn look.

2. Find the paper featuring the grate with blue/blue-green and burgundy colors in the Metal Through the Lens pack. Cut it to 3 3/4 x 5 inches. Ink edges with Mermaid Lagoon Distress Ink. Tatter edges.

3. Using the Coneflower set, die cut 2 sets of flowers and leaves from Stone Through the Lens cardstock (the piece with brown cracks, which is mostly light gray and has the light blue cement texture). Hint: I lined up the cracks so they would go down the middle of the leaves to look like veins. To color the leaves, use Distress Inks in Cracked Pistachio (centers) and Pine Needles (edges). Working from center to petal tips, color one flower with Cracked Pistachio, Peacock Feathers, and Mermaid Lagoon. Be sure to color the backs as well. Color the other flower with Abandoned Coral and Aged Mahogany (center to tips).

4. Die cut one center (stamen) each from light pink and white cardstock. Add Aged Mahogany to the tips of the light pink and Cracked Pistachio, Peacock Feathers, and Mermaid Lagoon (bottom to top) to the white. (Optional: you could cut both from white cardstock then use Abandoned Coral on the bottom of the one with Aged Mahogany.) Note: I cut the bottom of the stamen roughly in half so the centers will be a bit lower in the flowers.

5. Add Distress Glaze to all pieces. This will help prevent ink from leeching through the white paint.

6. Shape petals and leaves using toolkit and mini molding pad; construct flowers as shown in the video below:

7. Stamp sentiment in black ink on pink cardstock. Die cut sentiment with Katie Label Pivot Card label, mid sized (it should fit perfectly around the words). Add a little Aged Mahogany ink, mostly on the edges. Optional: Add a small amount of Antique Linen in places to give it a more aged look.

8. Add white acrylic paint to edges of everything and randomly on flowers and leaves. Cut a piece of wall joint tape to about 2 x 3 inches.

9. Adhere Through the Lens grate cardstock to charcoal cardstock, then both of those to card front. Adhere joint tape, cheesecloth, label (use dimensional tape), flowers, leaves and enamel dots as shown.

Shimmering Chrysanthemums Card

Made for the ECD Susan Tierney-Cockburn Design Team

Shimmer Sheetz make really beautiful flowers! Here I decided to try them with Susan Tierney-Cockburn's Chrysanthemum dies. In person you can see a lot of different colors in the iridescent finish as you turn the card. The layers of black cardstock that make up the Hello sentiment give a really nice 3D look to the greeting. The embossed velvet background adds even more dimensionality to the card.

Making the Card

1. Cut Bright Orange Soft Finish cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Fold in half for a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base.

2. Cut black cardstock 3 3/4 x 5 inches. Cut yellow velvet adhesive to 3 5/8 x 4 7/8 inches. Emboss using Bouquet Embossing Folder. Peel off backing and stick to black cardstock. Adhere to front of orange card base.

3. Using Garden Notes - Chrysanthemum, die cut large and medium petals from Orange Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz and small petals from Yellow Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz. Die cut leaves and stem from Green Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz. Hint: use a Metal Cutting Plate to help cut through the Shimmer Sheetz.

4. Shape petals using ball stylus - you need to apply a bit more pressure than with card stock to get them to curl. Rub back of each petal then flip and press in center to get them to cup. Shape leaves by pressing on back with ball stylus then turn over and draw vein lines with leaf tool (pointed end). I cut off the leaf from one of the stems and glued it elsewhere. I also accidentally double cut one of the leaves but it came out OK, just smaller, so I used it. I used Glue Dots to adhere petal layers together, as well as to adhere the flower to the card.

5. Using Hello die, die cut 4 or 5 copies from black cardstock and one from Orange Iridescent Shimmer Sheetz. Glue the black copies together, lining them up to form a thick stack. Glue the orange copy on top. Adhere to card as shown.

6. Adhere enamel dots where shown. Tie two pieces of twine into a bow. Adhere where shown.

Carolina Farmhouse Door Card

The new Through the Lens papers by Elizabeth Craft Designs are so beautiful and fun! I used them to give me a jump start in creating the door and stone wall on this card. They provided the perfect colors and textures since they are actual photos of wood and stone. I did some minor shading on the stones to warm them up a bit but it isn't really necessary - you could leave the paper as is.

Making the Card

1. Cut gray cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half to form a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base.

2. Die cut Carolina Farmhouse Door from Wood Series cardstock - look for the piece that is mostly red on one side - that is the side you will use. If you do it carefully, you can cut extra pieces from the same sheet as shown below. The side pieces are 1/8 inch wide. Die cut an extra top part of the door as well; from this piece, cut off strips from the very top and two down.

3. Use dimensional tape to pop up pieces from windows as panels on front of door. Trim strips for sides of door if necessary, then adhere with dimensional tape. Do the same with the top strips you cut.

4. Cut a small piece of both craft foam and gold foil cardstock; glue together. Die cut with smallest circle die from Tags & More 7 - it's the perfect size for a door knob. Adhere as shown. Cut a piece of plastic packaging to fit behind windows; adhere with glue (I used Beacon Gem-Tac).

5. Look through Stone Series cardstock for a piece that will work best for the wall (I used the one with hints of blue paint on it). Optional: Add Antique Linen Distress Ink to give the paper a warmer tone. Optional: Add shading with alcohol markers (I used Copic E31 and E34). Cut stones (New England Stone Wall & Gate).

6. Note where door will be located on front of card (I moved the door each direction to draw pencil guides under it; one on each side and one on top). Glue stones around that area. Add dimensional tape all over back of door. Adhere a piece of patterned paper behind window to look like wallpaper. Adhere door where shown.

7. Die cut several sets of leaves from green and light green cardstock using the Mini Leaves dies. Draw vein lines using colored pencils. Shape with ball stylus and draw lines down veins with leaf tool. Adhere the leaves in a wreath shape on the door (I cut a base from green cardstock using the smallest circle die in the Ring Accordion, then used the next size up to draw the outer ring and cut along the line; I adhered the leaves to this before placing on door). Tie a small bow with thin ribbon and adhere at top of wreath.

8. Optional: From light pink cardstock, cut 6 small flowers from Mini Daisy & Chrysanthemum. Shade middles with pink colored pencil. Shape with ball stylus behind flowers then pressing in middle on front. Layer offset in sets of two to make three flowers. Add a dot of Buttercup Liquid Pearls in middle of each. Adhere to wreath where shown.

9. Stamp sentiment inside of card in black ink.

Window on an Embossed Wall Card

Made for the ECD Susan Tierney-Cockburn Design Team

I was so excited when I received the Carolina Window & Shutters dies by Susan Tierney-Cockburn; I just love windows for cards! I've been waiting to use it for a special design - I didn't want to just do the standard Christmas window with wreath (although they do look great) or a window with curtains. I finally decided on a monochromatic white design, using recycled plastic packaging for the panes of glass. I also love how the embossed wall creates a wonderful textured background.

Making the Card

1. Cut white cardstock 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches; fold in half for a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch card base.

2. Cut white cardstock 3 7/8 x 5 1/8 inches. Emboss with Flower Mosaic. Adhere to front of card (note: you may want to use a liquid glue to get it to really stick down).

3. Die cut from white cardstock: 2 window frames (you won't need shutters - keep them for another project or recycle them), 3 sets of vines, 4 sets of flowers (32 total). Shape leaves by drawing a line down the middle of each. Shape petals by drawing a line down each petal then rubbing in the middle with a ball stylus; on half the flowers, press harder and/or use smaller ball stylus to make center petals; this makes them cup up more. Stack center petals on base petals, gluing offset. I use Kids Choice Glue for all my flowers.

4. Using scrap leftovers from one of the windows as a template, place it just higher than center on the card. Draw a pencil guide line a little inside the template (do not draw shutters). Using a craft knife, cut window into front of card inside guide line - you want a lip on which to glue the frame but not enough to show beyond the window frame. Draw a similar guide on a piece of clear plastic packaging using an alcohol based marker, like a Sharpie. Cut along guide with scissors. Glue plastic on backside of one window fame (trim if necessary). I used Gem-Tac Glue for this. Glue to front of card, covering hole. Glue remaining frame inside card to give it a finished look.

5. Adhere one vine starting at bottom left below window as shown. Leave branches free (i.e. don't glue them down). Cut bases off other vines and glue them starting under the first vine - you want them to look like they are all one vine. Trim them apart if necessary.

6. Adhere flowers as shown. Adhere one white pearl bead in center of each with Gem-Tac Glue.
